New Britain Food and Resource Center Opens Doors

The New Britain Food and Resource Center opened its doors Monday, January 5, 2009, at 460 Osgood Avenue. The new site has a fully stocked food pantry where clients can select their own groceries. It will soon offer free income tax preparation, literacy services and job skill training and referrals. The Center is the culmination of three years of efforts by New Britain United Way volunteers, local agencies, and municipal and business leaders to address food insecurity, social and health needs in New Britain. 2008 United Way Community Campaign Raises $28,156,916!

The United Way Community Campaign is pleased to announce that despite current economic challenges, it has raised nearly $500,000 more than last year. The funds raised through the Community Campaign benefit a wide network of local nonprofit programs and services that help to ensure success for children, healthy and financially stable families, and a safety net of services for all who need them. Local United Way–Led Collaborative Receives Workforce Development Grant

The Workforce Solutions Collaborative of Metro Hartford has received a three-year, $450,000 grant from the National Fund for Workforce Solutions to move low-wage workers into higher paying jobs while meeting local employers' demand for a skilled workforce. For the full story, click here.

Non-Profit Pulse Survey Reflects Uncertainty in Economy

The need for services is rising and the economic outlook is grim, according to the Fifth Annual Non-profit Pulse Survey. The survey, released by United Way of Central and Northeastern Connecticut in partnership with Hartford Business Journal, gauged the outlook of more than 400 executive directors of non-profit organizations throughout central and northeastern Connecticut and found that community support is needed now more than ever.

IRA Charitable Rollover Reinstated

The Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008 (H.R. 1424) has been signed into law and includes an extension of the IRA Charitable Rollover. If you are 70½ or older, you can make a distribution in any amount up to $100,000 per year from your IRA to your favorite nonprofit organization, free from income tax. Certain restrictions apply.
