Community Connections Podcast: Addressing and Preventing Suicide

Every 15 minutes, someone dies by suicide in this country. And for every victim of suicide, at least six people’s lives are intimately affected. But there are things we can do to help.

On this month's United Way Community Connections, aired live on WTIC 1080-AM, we learned how we can decrease the risk of suicide for ourselves and those we care about. We discovered the warning signs that someone needs help and examined ways we can help those who are struggling with suicide and behavioral health issues.

Pratt & Whitney Finds a 'Whale' of a Way to Support the Community

Pratt & Whitney employees and the Connecticut Whale joined forces Dec. 27 for a rousing hockey game that benefited the United Way Community Campaign. Hundreds of employees from Pratt & Whitney and other United Technologies Corp. companies attended the Whale’s home game against the Albany Devils as part of a game coupon program that raises money for local charitable causes. The Whale won 3-2.

New Britain Middle School Students Improve Behavior, Grades through Innovative Partnership

Student behavior and performance is improving in three New Britain middle schools, due in large part to an innovative classroom management model supported by United Way and other local partners, including the Community Chest of New Britain and Berlin.

Funders Collaborate for After School Learning in Windham

Only about 20 percent of a student’s waking hours are spent in school. So while time in the classroom is important, after school programs can also significantly increase students’ engagement in learning and improve academic performance. The need for these programs is especially important in the Windham region.

Campaign Celebration Honors ‘Our Towns’

EAST HARTFORD — More than 500 local company volunteers and leaders gathered Tuesday to celebrate the official conclusion of the 2011 United Way Community Campaign, which serves the 40 towns of central and northeastern Connecticut. To date, the 2011 United Way Community Campaign has raised $25.3 million, and more results are on the way.

The state’s largest private employer, United Technologies Corporation, raised $6.4 million, or 25 percent of the total amount contributed to the United Way Community Campaign.

Easing the ‘Burr’den of Financial Stability

Financial Empowerment Center opens at Alfred E. Burr School

HARTFORD — A partnership of local nonprofits and organizations—with support from Hartford Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Christina Kishimoto and Mayor Pedro E. Segarra, announced the opening of the Financial Empowerment Center at Alfred E. Burr School and celebrated the first anniversary of the United Way Women’s Leadership Council Nov. 22.

Thank you to UConn Football for hosting us Saturday, Nov. 5 at the game vs. Syracuse! A few of our partners, including HRA of New Britain, Our Piece of the Pie, and Catholic Charities Archdiocese of Hartford, joined us on the field!

United Way Supporters ‘Band Together’ For the Community; 20th Annual United Way Day of Caring Kicks off 2011 Community Campaign, News

HARTFORD—The 2011 United Way Community Campaign got off to a rockin’ start with a Battle of the Bands at Mortensen Riverfront Plaza Sept. 7 and the announcement of the $25.8 million campaign goal, while more than 1,000 people volunteered for the 20th Annual United Way Day of Caring.

Volunteers from 26 local workplaces completed 20 signature volunteer projects across central and northeastern Connecticut—including in Hartford, West Hartford, East Hartford, Enfield, New Britain and Avon—as part of United Way’s 20th annual Day of Caring.*
