Avon: Free Help to Apply for Food Assistance

Are you struggling to make ends meet? Recent changes to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, formerly food stamps) mean that you may qualify for help even if you haven't in the past. SNAP works like a debit card, so you have privacy at the grocery store.

Free SNAP application assistance will be available on Tuesday, October 18th from 1PM to 4PM at the Avon Senior Center located at 635 West Avon Road in Avon.

Social Services Bus Coming to Avon May 3 and Canton May 10

Need help with food, prescriptions, health insurance or health and human services? Connecticut’s “Rx Express” bus is coming to Avon and Canton during the month of May, thanks to Avon United Way and the Avon and Canton town Social Services departments. This volunteer-led project is part of United Way's work to help local people make ends meet.

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance

As part of our commitment to helping working families become more financially stable, United Way of Central and Northeastern Connecticut is proud to support Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) sites in partnership with the Hartford Asset Building Collaborative (managed by Co-opportunity Inc.), the New Britain Asset Building Coalition (managed by HRA of New Britain), the Bank of America Charitable Foundation, the Walmart Foundation, and Comcast Corporation. This service is supported by contributions to United Way Community Investment through the United Way Community Campaign.

Volunteers needed for Income Tax Assistance program

WINDHAM — Volunteers are needed for Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) sites in Windham and surrounding towns.

The VITA program, which is run by Co-opportunity Inc. in partnership with Windham Region United Way, provides free tax preparation services to lower-income working families and helps them take advantage of tax credits and refunds, including the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC). Last year, VITA volunteers helped bring $1.7 million in federal tax refunds—including $647,000 in EITCs—back to people in the Windham area.

United Way Launches Women's Leadership Council

United Way of Central and Northeastern Connecticut launched a Women’s Leadership Council Oct. 20, announcing plans to implement financial education programs at one of the Hartford Community Schools.

Workforce Solutions Collaborative of Metro Hartford Shares in Honor from Council on Foundations

Workforce Solutions Collaborative of Metro Hartford, a collaborative led by United Way of Central and Northeastern Connecticut and one of 22 national sites supported by the National Fund for Workforce Solutions, is sharing in national recognition from the Council on Foundations. The National Fund for Workforce Solutions received the Distinguished Grantmaking Award for Collaboration April 27 from the Council on Foundations, a Washington, DC-based nonprofit membership association of some 2,000 grantmaking foundations and corporations.
