The federal government recently extended the charitable IRA rollover, which allows Americans to make a tax-free gift from their individual retirement account to a nonprofit organization. The charitable IRA rollover, which passed in Congress December 16 and was signed into law by President Obama on December 17, allows Americans over age 70 ½ to make tax-free transfers of up to $100,000 from their IRA directly to a charitable organization.
The law extends the charitable IRA rollover for 2010 and 2011. The rollover for 2010 is retroactive to January 1, 2010, which allows donors to elect to treat IRA rollover gifts made in January 2011 as if they were made on December 31, 2010.
