Responding to Need: Constitution Society Member Tim Fitch

Tim Fitch, a Farmington resident and United Way Constitution Society member, was among the American Red Cross volunteers who responded after three devastating tornadoes hit the Springfield, Massachusetts, metro area in June 2011. We sat down with Tim to find out what motivates him to give of his time and dollars. The following is an excerpt from our conversation.

You and your family have given generously to United Way for many years. What motivates you?

My wife and I have been United Way donors for many years. I started giving when I was a young adult working at Cigna. I started with $1, then $2, then $5 a week. My co-workers were very involved in charitable activities and they inspired me. United Way was a part of our corporate culture there, and also at The Hartford, where I worked later.

What led you to become a volunteer with the American Red Cross, and what was your role in the Springfield tornado recovery?

In our part of the country, natural disasters aren't too common. But when they do occur, it's good to know there are people trained to help.

I've wanted to volunteer for a long time but it wasn't until 2008, when I retired, that I was finally able to find the time. My wife and I have both been volunteering with the American Red Cross ever since. This summer, I managed the Red Cross shelter at the MassMutual Convention Center. While I was there, the shelter housed 280 people.

What do you like most about your volunteer work?

It's challenging but extremely rewarding. In the wake of a disaster there are some very acute needs, and it feels great to be able to be part of the team at the scene helping to address those needs.

American Red Cross is a United Way Community Investment partner. And for almost 20 years, you've chosen to designate your gift to United Way Community Investment. Could you tell us why?

Community Investment is like the mutual fund of charities. When I write a check to Community Investment, I can be confident that my gift will be used for programs that fill the greatest needs in the community and really produce results. I'm not an expert on nonprofit organizations, and I like knowing United Way is out there doing the research for me, year after year.
