NEW BRITAIN — United Way of New Britain and Berlin has awarded $10,000 to the New Britain Food & Resource Center, a project of the New Britain Food Security Collaborative.
The New Britain Food and Resource Center, managed by Human Resources Agency of New Britain at 460 Osgood Avenue, helps low- to moderate-income families obtain emergency food and other services on the north side of the city, an area which currently receives few services. This center is more than a food pantry; at the site, New Britain Food Security Collaborative partners offer referrals and case management to help each family become more independent and financially stable. On-site services include employment referrals and help with job searches; energy assistance; free income tax assistance; and HUSKY enrollment.
The New Britain Food Security Collaborative was established by United Way of New Britain and Berlin and more than 30 other community organizations in 2006 to address the city’s high level of food insecurity. The collaborative’s mission is to eliminate food insecurity for New Britain residents and provide resources and services to help them attain self-sufficiency.
United Way of New Britain and Berlin is part of United Way of Central and Northeastern Connecticut, which has been meeting human care needs in 40 towns across central and northeastern Connecticut since 1924. United Way advances the common good by focusing on the building blocks of a good life: education, income and health, including a safety net of services.
