United Way receives grants to support income tax assistance

United Way of Central and Northeastern Connecticut has received a $30,000 grant from the Walmart Foundation and $12,500 from the Bank of America Charitable Foundation to support local Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) sites.

At local VITA sites, IRS-trained volunteers help lower-income working families prepare and electronically file their state and federal income tax forms at no charge and determine whether they qualify for tax credits and refunds, including the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC).  The EITC is a refundable federal income tax credit for lower-income working individuals and families.  United Way supports VITA sites managed by Co-opportunity, HRA of New Britain, and their partners as part of its commitment to helping lower-income working families become more financially stable.

“Volunteers at VITA sites ensure that hard-working families in our communities get the tax credits and refunds they deserve and go home with information on how to maximize their refund to get ahead financially,” said Susan Dunn, president and CEO of United Way of Central and Northeastern Connecticut. “VITA programs are crucial to building financial stability for families in our area.”
